On his quest to recapture the entire Roman empire Justinian found himself in possession of the erstwhile capital of the defunct Western Roman empire, Ravenna. As some of the first coins struck by the newly reopened mint recaptured from the Ostrogoths. Even though Justinian was mostly successful in occupying a majority of the West, his accomplishment was only temporary. For nearly immediately most of the conquests were lost, and in 712 the Lombards occupied Ravenna. This mint was so productive during this time period, that during Justinian I’s reign and estimated 11% of all copper coinage in Sicily was struck in Ravenna, as discussed by Herrin and Nelson in their 2016 book, Ravenna: its role in earlier medieval change and exchange.
