Issued in 1904, after King Georg’s death, this silver proof 2 mark coin was struck by the small mint at Muldenhütten. This small facility was actually quite new to the German numismatic scene, having opened in 1887. When the historic Dresden mint was closed in 1884, the mint was first moved to Halsbrücke and then Muldenhütten (two small suburbs of Freiburg). The mint however would retain the historic Saxony “E” mint mark, which had been used for over 300 years! While the old Münzmeister, Gustav Julius Buschick, would retire when the Dresden mint was shuttered, his subordinate Max Barduleck would continue on as the Chief Engraver and medalist until his retirement in 1911. Having never received a replacement after the death of Barduleck’s successor in World War II during the Dresden Bombings, the mint limped along until it was finally shuttered in 1953.
