Antiochus VII was one of the sons of Demetrius I Soter. During his nine year reign he worked hard to reclaim some of the lost Seleucid territory. One notable thing, during a conflict with the Jews, under John Hyrcanus, Antiochus allowed a truce of seven days so that a religious holiday could be held. Despite being on opposite sides, this act of goodwill did not go unnoticed by the Jews. Antiochus was given the name Euergetes, the benefactor, as a result. In later wars the Jews assisted Antiochus and John Hyrcanus actually refrained from attacking Seleucid areas.
