Most of the coinage of Boeotia is similar stylistically showing a shield on the obverse with an amphora on the reverse. Sometimes a magistrates name may appear with the amphora. This coin is marked by one of the greatest statesmen ever known from Boeotia, Epaminondas in c. 364-362 BC. This coin was produced a few before his death in the battle of Mantinea against the Peloponnesian armies in c. 362 BC. Epaminondas was valued as a leader with military prowess. He was fatally wounded in battle Mantinea and with his death came the end of Theban hegemony.
