This coin was issued by Hidrieus, who Demosthenes describes Hidreios as one of the most wealthy and powerful of the princes of Asia. He ruled the region of Caria from his capital of Halikarassos alongside his sister-wife Ada until 344 BC when he died in 344 BC after a highly successful reign of 7 years. Known mainly for his buildingworks and his cooperation with Persian military exploits in the region; Hidrieus also issued a series of interesting coins, of which this example is one. Interestingly, but not entirely surprisingly, the coins of Hidrieus and his brothers Maussollos and Pixodaros are modeled off of the more recognizable coins from nearby Rhodes. While the type has been described as “incipient” in the past, this particular example is comparatively delicate and well struck up.
