Christopher Henry Thomas (C.H.T.) Hawkins, was a man of many collecting habits, not the least were Greek and British coins. Hawkings, and his wife Jane Ellen, who lived in London and Trewithen, Cornwall in the latter half of the 19th century, were known for their extensive collections of old master paintings, snuff boxes (later sold for $403,000 in 1936), jewels, and Japanese artwork. Shortly after his death, his wife, donated a portion of the numismatic collection to the British Museum in 1904. Additional portions of the Hawkins collection were sold by Sotheby on March 31st, 1909 for a total of £616.3s.6d, of which this coin (part of lot 34) hammered for £2.2s. The lot was won by the numismatic firm Rollin & Feuardent. The sale also featured other spectacular coins such as an Ainos tetradrachm won by Seltman for £12.1s and a Stater of Elis that hammered for £25.10s won by Baldwin!
