Julia Mamaea, whose full name was Julia Avita Mamaea, was the mother of the last of the Severan emperors, Severus Alexander. Severus being only fourteen years old, she served as his regent and was initially very successful. She helped to reverse results from some of the poor judgements the previous ruler and cousin, Elagabalus, made when emperor. Once Severus Alexander married the beautiful Orbiana, Julia Mamaea became jealous of their relationship and feared Orbiana would wrestle power from her. The marriage lasted two short years and Orbiana was exiled to Libya. Mamaea eventually was killed with her son by the Praetorian Guard in 235 and thus the Severan Dynasty came to end.
