Nerva was already 66 years old when he became emperor. He had a successful political life prior to his ascension, particularly during the Flavian period during both the reigns of Vespasian and his son Domitian. Upon Domitian’s assasination he was promptly made emperor by the Roman Senate. Domitian severely limited the liberties of the people and one of Nerva’s goals was to restore harmony to the people. Unfortunately his reign was marred by financial difficulties and also an inability to control the Roman army. Despite his issues, Nerva died a natural death and even was able to bridge a peaceful transition of power to his adoptive son Trajan.
