Here is an example from a remarkable series of large AE Drachmai struck in Alexandria during the 8th year of Antoninus Pius' reign (144/5 AD). While Roman coins depicting astrological themes are all too common, this series stands as something more special. Depicting not only one of the twelve zodiac signs, each coin also depicts one of the five planets known to the Romans: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, or Moon (also considered to be planets by the ancients). These pairings however were not slapdash or random, but instead followed astrological theory. On this particular example we see a bust of Venus over Taurus the bull with a star to her left. If you ascribe to astrology, this means that Venus is in her night house of Taurus and that there are extra influences on love to be ever more sensual, stable, and loyal.
