The large bronze coins from Volaterrae are contemporary with the libral series of the Roman Republic, however, there are some noticeable differences. For one, the coins are thinner and flatter than the typical Aes Grave found in Rome during the same period. They also are quite a bit larger in size (approximately 70-74mm compared to a much smaller 60-64mm). Lastly, the same types of images are stylistically dramatically different. For example, the Aes Grave from Rome shows a bearded janus head. The janiform head on the Etrurian series shows a more youthful and beardless head. They also appear to be wearing a hat. The reverse shows a club, a mark of value and the city name. The Etrurian bronzes were not as widely distributed as those of their Roman counterparts.
