Louis the Pious was the only surviving son of Charlemagne and Hildegard. After his father’s death in 814 AD he became the sole ruler of the Franks. Louis was made King of Aquitaine as a three-year-old in 781 AD. His reign is generally seen as less successful as his father although aside from a familial conflict in the 1830’s it was peaceful.
