Svend Estridsen is one of the most important figures in the history of Denmark. He was the son of Ulf Thorgilsson and Estrid Svendsdatter, and the grandson of King Sweyn I Forkbeard through his mother's line. Svend had 20 children, most of them born out of wedlock to mistresses. He is known in history as the King of Kings as several of his children (5) became later Kings of Denmark. His skeletal remains suggest that Svend was a large man that walked with a limp. He was not overly successful in battle but he was considered courageous. He attempted throughout his life to strengthen ties to the church by building houses of worship all over Denmark. He is considered Denmark’s last Viking king as well as their first medieval sovereign.
