This coin was struck in Segovia, Spain in 1853 under the Spanish monarch, Isabel II. She is the only queen regent in the history of unified Spain. Her father, Ferdinand II (1784-1833), had the "misfortune" of not having any male heirs. He was married four times with his final marriage producing two daughters who lived past infancy. In order to continue his family line, he issued what was called a pragmatic sanction to revert the Salic law to ensure that his firstborn daughter could succeed him. This eventually happened in 1833 at the age of three. Her reign ended in 1868 when a naval mutiny occurred in Cadiz which fueled the Glorious Revolution. Isabel sought refuge in France and eventually lived her remaining years in that country.
