This fraction circulated around the ancient area of Massalia (modern day Marseille in France). Massalia was founded in c. 600 BC by Ionian Greek settlers from Phocaea, located on the western coast of Turkey. Massalia was a busy trading city and set up outposts in several coastal cities. It remained so until the first century BC when it sided with the Roman consul and enemy of Julius Caesar, Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus. Upon the defeat of Ahenobarbus, Massalia was left to fend for itself. Julius Caesar eventually beseiged the city and took control of the area. Due to its longstanding relationship with Rome, it was able to retain some autonomy. This small coin was certainly used for trade in the city prior to the intrusion of the Romans.
