This extremely important issue might appear to be an ordinary Alexander tetradrachm. It was, however, struck in the name of Alexander only as he predeceased the production of this coin. Sometime shortly after Alexander's death, his boyhood friend Ptolemy took authority over Egypt. His first issues mimicked the coinage of Alexander to slowly ease the people into the change of guard. Stylistically, the type is magnificant with a pure Hellenistic portrait of the deceased King. The reverse shows a symbol of the great city of Memphis, a flower.
