Carus ruled directly after the emperor Probus for a little more than a year. He was already over 60 when he began his reign and his death was reported as being “struck by lightning” which is highly unlikely. While emperor, he was battling the Sarmatians (a tribe which came out of modern day Iran) and Germanic tribes along the Danube. He was succeeded in death by his two sons Carinus and Numerian.
