Many of the Republican moneyers were known only in name. Most can't be linked with much more than the historical context of when the coin was struck. This coin was struck under the moneyer, Gaius Coelius Caldus, he served as consul with Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus in 94 BC (Ahenobarbus was related to the later emperor Nero). Caldus has the honor of having his image on a coin that was struck under his grandson in 51 BC. He was remembered most for his passage of the lex tabullaria, which made voting secret and anonymous.
