Nothing is really known of the moneyer that was responsible for this coinage as is typical of many of the moneyers from the Roman Republican era. Historically, In 199 BC, Scipio Africanus (full name Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus) who was a Roman statesman and general and one of the main influencers responsible for winning the second Punic War against Carthage, became a censor of the Roman senate as well as princeps Senatus (the head of the Roman Senate). Scipio was primarily responsible for the defeat of Hannibal in 202 in Zama. This successful campaign in Africa is what earned him the name of Scipio Africanus.
