The Republican Muse series is among the most lovely of Republican coinage. Not a lot is known of the moneyer but it is obvious that a pun on his name was the intention of this series. There are nine muses of the series: Melpomene, the muse of tragic drama, Terpsichore, the muse of dance, Erato, the muse of erotic or lyrical poetry, Polyhymnia, the muse of sacred poetry, Urania, the muse of astronomy, Thalia, the muse of comedy, and finally, Hercules, the leader of the muses.
