Historically, Charlemagne (or Charles the Great) is remembered for being King of the Franks from 768 AD, King of the Lombards from 774 AD and finally Emperor of the Romans from 800 AD. Charlemagne was the first recognized ruler of western Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire. He was crowned by Pope Leo III at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome on Christmas Day in 800 AD.  Charlemagne became a champion of the Catholic church.
