Known as 'Britannia in Portico', this stunning little coin commemorates the 1713 Peace of Utrecht, and clearly demonstrates the artistic ability of the British mint engravers. The reverse showcases a practically 3D effect and the obverse portrait of Queen Anne is quite deeply engraved, both factors led to a more intricate design than usual. Even as a pattern coin from the early 1700’s, this type in silver is particularly rare. According to Wilson Peck (1970), this is most likely due to die failure. When Peck wrote his seminal book, English Copper, Tin and Bronze Coins in The British Museum, 1558-1958, there was only one example (in all metals) known without the distinctive die flaw located on the lower right reverse. He speculated that the flaw developed quite early in the dies life, and it most likely led either to complete failure, or fell victim to mint quality control. Either way, production ended after a very few number of strikes.
